Ex Standby Records / Mediaskare President starts new label

Posted on 25 March 2010 by Jayp

Jonathan King who is better known for his work at Mediaskare Records, Standby Records and Movement Management recently teamed up with Matthew Stiles (formely of Warm Fuzzy PR) to start an Empire, a Static Age Empire.

Here’s the official press release on this Record label, Management and PR Firm.

—-

Started as what seemed to be a pipe dream, Static Age Records was a concept in mid 2009. Conversations filled with “we shoulds” and “if we had control, we’d do’s” were frequent. But it wasn’t until the start of the year that Jonathan King and Shane Matthew Stiles teamed up to start the label. “Starting my own label has always been something I’ve wanted to do since I started working on the business side of music almost 10 years ago.” King explained. “Having worked with both major and indie labels over the years I felt I had learned as much as I possibly could to finally start something of my own and really run with it.” Stiles added, “I’d put in six years as a publicist, two as a concert promoter, and eight as a journalist, the only thing I hadn’t done was a label. To borrow from the baseball world, it was about time that I hit for the cycle.”

“We both came from situations where we didn’t have 100% control of the rosters we worked with and wanted to make sure that for this label, we didn’t just take bands that we knew would move units. There’s no heart in that.” Stiles explained. “I just want to have a label where music fans know we truly believe in every release we put out. We are all about the music first.” King joined in. Taking the bull by the horns, four bands were signed up almost immediately, Better Left Unsaid (formerly of Stillborn Records), New Jersey exports The Banner (the band’s final release ever), highly sought after midwestern metal act Sleep Serapis Sleep, and Ohio’s The Gun Show.

With the first release slated for Summer 2010, Static Age Records is solidifying a physical distribution deal for the US, merchandising agreements with District Lines, Hot Topic exclusive deals, and other exciting opportunities for their upcoming artists.

The World Alive kicks out drummer

The World Alive kicks out drummer

Posted on 01 March 2010 by Jayp

Fearless Records’ The World Alive have been one of the most hard working up and coming bands in the last last or so, but like it does so many times when bands go from zeroes to  heroes so quickly, it’s not all love and smiles in their world.

You can catch the band on the Emptiness tour with Alesana, A Skylit Drive, Of Mice and Men and We Came As Romans with drummer Justin Salinas (My children my bride, Catherine, Scars Of Tomorrow) after announcing a couple of days ago that they had recently fired drummer and founding member Tony Aguilera.

here is what Aguilera had to say about the news (taken from his personal Myspace)

I figured that before any fake explanations are made or rumors are started, I’ll explain myself. Before I attempt to explain why I’m not in the word alive anymore, let me give you a breif history of the band, the word alive.  ORIGINAL MEMBERS Craig Mabbitt, Tony Aguilera, Tony Pizutti, Zack Hansen, and Dusty Riach.  Craig and I were in a band together when we were 15 and 16 years old called the casanova rodeo. Many years later craig called me to start a new band like we’d always talked about, and Zack, who he’d played many shows with back in the day. Zack brought in Tony P who didn’t want to be in a pop band anymore, and Nick, who was in that pop band as well.  My good friend Dusty and I were in two previous bands together and made music together on a daily basis, we called our project band THE WORD ALIVE, so I brought him into the band.  One day we all met up and the word alive was formed. We jammed in our practice room, finished two songs in our first two practices, recorded them, put them online and blew up faster than we ever thought we would. We quickly became better and closer friends and recorded a 5 song ep. Before we knew it we were getting label offers left and right. We wanted to be signed and tour, but we couldn’t do that with Craig as our singer because he was already signed to a label so a “group” decision was made to look for a new singer. Fearless records sounded the best to us. One of the reasons being that they wanted to sign us without even having a permanent singer yet. A couple people tried out and we picked the one who we thought would work out the best. So Telle came into the band. Even though he was sick when he tried out, we decided he had potential so we gave him the chance. He played bass in Greeley Estates at the time, but he quit because he wanted to be a frontman.  We then took the opportunity, drove up to Cali and sat down with Fearless records and made a promise to the label that this was the band that was going to be together until the end. We all gave up everything we had, I dropped out of college, even though I only had 3 more quarters to go til I had my degree, quit our jobs, etc. Shortly after we signed, we recorded an ep in Florida with Andrew Wade. We then went on to do several tours with bigger and bigger bands. Sky Eats Airplane, In Fear and Faith, We Came as Romans, Silverstein, Madina Lake, Alesana, From First to Last. Unfortunately Telle was sick on every one of these tours, and over the course of the past year he was sick about 97% of the time. We even had to cancel the end of a tour, and play shows without him because he couldn’t sing. It became an inside joke about how bad he sounded live. But none of us are perfect live, we all have had our moments where we’ve messed up a little part here or there, especially that guitar solo in how to build an empire, but we all continued to improve. On our last tour I messed up when the click track I play to off of an ipod nano started a click late and an 808 was off.  Apparently those little mistakes were enough because I was told shortly after we got home from our last tour that they were going to be looking for a new drummer. I had no idea this was going to happen, and had no warning that I was in danger of being kicked out and prior to being told this I would have called them my best friends.  I had no problems with anyone in the band, and based on what I thought we were all still good friends and were stoked to write our upcoming full length together. Even though we hadn’t practiced or jammed together a single time since before we recorded our cd in March, over 10 months ago, (we played over a hundred shows since then) I am not going to be given the opportunity to show my talent and improvement on the new cd, and even though I’ve done all the work as a drummer to get them where they are. (Warped Tour, Bamboozle, whatever other tours they’ve gotten) I guess I can’t suck THAT bad..right? So to sum it up this all goes to getting fucked over by the few friends I thought I had.  Even though I was best friends with one of them for years before this band started, let him live with me in my first house and helped talk his way into the band when he had only been playing his instrument for a couple months, even though I let another move into my house for several months (rent free for most of those months) when he had nowhere else to go, and even though I was alongside everyone else when we made the promise that this was the band that was going to be together until the end, that wasn’t enough to secure my spot as a permanent member in the band because the “group” decision has been made, which is one or two members who convinced the rest that this is how it has to be. I guess being in the band isn’t about making music with your friends anymore, it’s about doing anything you possibly can to try to further your “musical career” in the slightest bit, even if that means completely screwing over someone who was there from the start and someone you called a good friend, or just sitting back and not saying anything because you don’t want to get in the way. I’m sorry if you actually are upset about me not being in the band anymore. If you need, you can head over to myspace.com/frontmantelle and I’m sure he’ll have a blog that’ll be sure to enlighten you.

I especially wanted to take the time to thank every single person who came up and talked to me at one of our shows, and everyone who supported the band while I was in it, and all the friends I made in the bands I toured with. I’ve already talked to many of you. You guys are all awesome, and made everything worth while. I made many friends along the way and I really am sad that I won’t be able to see most of you again.  Feel free to write me anytime you’d like, it’d be nice to hear from some of you guys. Just know that I will not be done with music, I’ve been talking with some oldddd friends about a project that will be very similar to how TWA was originally created. (if ya get my drift…) I’ll keep you posted! If you’ve enjoyed watching the update videos we posted while I was in the band then I am glad because I was responsible for creating all of those.  I’ll keep making videos and posting them, wether it’s of a new musical project or just a random videos for your entertainment. It’s not the end of the world for me. It’s been very nice hanging with some real friends again. I’m excited to continue my photography career and will be posting many new photos soon, I’m in the process of making my website (www.tonyaguileraphoto.com) booking photoshoots, and tryin to live, Keep lookin’ out!
If anyone thinks I made any of this up, or this isn’t the complete truth, then please, ask the band at one of their upcoming shows what happened, and maybe they can give you a better explanation, cause I wasn’t given too clear of a reason either. I didn’t write this to start drama, I just think everyone deserves to know it how it is.
Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
Keep it real kids!
-Tony Aguilera”

EXCLUSIVE Interview with Crash Coordinates

EXCLUSIVE Interview with Crash Coordinates

Posted on 09 January 2010 by Kramer

Chris Kalla-Lead vocals, Guitar

1. How did Crash Coordinates begin?

The band started when Chris Kalla and Chris Wahl decided to play music together. Once we both came together we then searched for a final lineup of the members we have today. From the beginning our primary goal was to create a name, MySpace with some marketable photos and cut an album. That is when we set out to record our first e.p. Ansible. Once we finished Ansible we then began promoting our music to different bands and fans around Arizona. We used marketing tools such as CDs and fliers to create an awareness of Crash Coordinates. We attended a large variety of shows promoting our band and our music. We also utilized MySpace as a huge marketing tool to reach out to audiences outside of Arizona. Online we have spent numerous hours adding friends and commenting to show that we care about our fans. On top of that we have also shared the stage with bands such as Brighten, Breathe Carolina, A Rocket to The Moon, The Summer Set, Anarbor, A Change of Pace, Ivoryline, A Cursive Memory, Never Shout Never.  We also have just released our sophomore album The Business of Making You Move which is available on Itunes and Smartpunk. With the new album and the majority of the band being done with college we hope to pursue a career in music, touring full time and making a living off our passion

2. Where did you get the name “Crash Coordinates?”

The name derives from their intentions of sharing their music with the world. Hence, “Crash” signifies blasting their music to different places, and “Coordinates” denotes their listeners. Chris Kalla came up with it one day while pondering the perplexities of the universe while in a search for a band name.

3. Who are the most inspirational bands/artists that you guys look up to?

The most inspirational bands that we look up to are bands such as; Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer and Metallica. All of the different bands are very creative and good at the style that they created. I feel that a lot of my influence as a musician has come from many of these bands overtime.

4. What kind of music do you guys like to listen to?

The music that I am currently listening to is Jimmy Eat World, Panic At The Disco and The Muse. Each member of Crash Coordinates has their own style of music and different bands that they enjoying listening to.

5. Any plans on a tour?

We are currently in the process of planning tours!

6. What’s the biggest band you’ve played with?

The biggest band we have played with is probably Saosin at the Marquee.

7. How did y’all meet Erik?  He seems pretty badass.  (Ari Gold would be proud)

I met Erik through Chris Wahl who became friends with him when Erik decided to make it out to one of Chris Wahls shows that he played when he was in a band back in the day, after I met him we became friends instantly.

8. When y’all aren’t making music, what do you like to do for fun?

When I am not making music I enjoy relaxing at home, hiking, exercising and sleeping.

9. What are Crash Coordinates’ plans for the future?

We hope to continue to play music together and make a career out of it.

10. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview.  Is there anything you would like to say your fans?

We love all of our fans very much and would like to thank them in helping us get to the point we are at now and for appreciating our music!

Chris Wahl-Guitar, Vocals

1. How did Crash Coordinates begin?

(We formed because Chris Wahl and Chris Kalla wanted to find a group of musicians who took playing music seriously and wanted to make a career out of it. We hoped to one day play music as a full time job. We went to a lot of shows to show face and meet promoters and bands. After building friendships with them to the point where they would book us we worked as hard as we could to pass out flyers at every show we could find, malls, and schools, we promoted hours a day online, and tried our best to bring kids out to shows and make sure everyone could have a good time. We have played with Brighten, Breathe Carolina, A Rocket to The Moon, The Summer Set, Anarbor, A Change of Pace, Ivoryline, A Cursive Memory, Never Shout Never. Successfully recording and releasing two albums completely independently. We would definitely appreciate the help of a label, but the fact we were able to organize and coordinate the song writing, producing, artwork, pressing, distribution, and all the other things that come with making and releasing a CD independently is quite the accomplishment.

2. Who are the most inspirational bands/artists that you guys look up to?

John Mayer, Metallica, Taylor Swift, Kenny Choi, Minus The Bear, Jimmy Eat World, Coheed and Cambria

3. What kind of music do you guys like to listen to?

Everything, Top 40, Country, Hip-Hop, Post Rock, you name it.

4. Any plans on a tour?

In the works.

5. What’s the biggest band you’ve played with?

Probably Never Shout Never, I think he is huge now.

6. How did y’all meet Erik?  He seems pretty badass.  (Ari Gold would be proud)

Chris Wahl was friends with a mutual friend who brought Erik to a show when Chris Wahl was still in his highschool band. They stayed friends since.

7. When y’all aren’t making music, what do you like to do for fun?

Play video games, hike, read

8. What are Crash Coordinates’ plans for the future?

Never Shout Never, Saosin, or Breathe Carolina

I met Erik as just a mutual friend of the band, and as we developed a relationship with him more and more we realized how much potential he had in management and he really cared about us enough to want to work for us. And the rest is history

6. When y’all aren’t making music, what do you like to do for fun?

Video games, watch movies, and hang out with the band.

7. What are Crash Coordinates’ plans for the future?

Write, record, tour, sign, record, write and record, play shows, record some more, enjoy playing music.

8. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview.  Is there anything you would like to say your fans?

You guys are amazing and I am glad we have so many wonderful friends who support us, thanks guys!

Kevin Williams-Bass

3. Who are the most inspirational bands/artists that you guys look up to?

I personally look up to the guys in Fall Out Boy because they come from the same area that I hail from. Just seeing how those guys have gotten to be a global phenomenon is pretty awesome. I remember seeing them at a VFW hall back in Chicago and now they are playing these huge arena tours, its pretty awesome.

4. What kind of music do you guys like to listen to?

I am pretty much all over the spectrum. The music I most listen to is like rock and post hardcore type stuff. I am really into Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Circa Survive, Underoath, Fall Out Boy, and Thrice.

5. Any plans on a tour?

Absolutely, that and getting signed are our two goals for this year.

6. What’s the biggest band you’ve played with?

We just played with Saosin, and I think to date that is the biggest act we have played with.

7. How did y’all meet Erik?  He seems pretty badass.  (Ari Gold would be proud)

From what I know he was a friend of a friend of Chris Wahl’s and ended up running merch for the band and then at some point got promoted. (laughs)

8. When y’all aren’t making music, what do you like to do for fun?

I listen to a ton of music, so I am constantly searching for new bands to listen to. Other than music itself I love watching movies. But for the most part we all go out together as a band as much as possible and party and what not.

9. What are Crash Coordinates’ plans for the future?

We are currently writing new songs, which are turning out fairly well so, we have that in store for everyone. Other than that, getting signed and getting on the road.

10. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview.  Is there anything you would like to say your fans?

Thank you for the continuing love and support, please keep telling everyone you know about Crash Coordinates, and we will see you all very soon!

Vincent Liou- Keys Synth

1. Who are the most inspirational bands/artists that you guys look up to?

I look up to Lady Gaga. I don’t know why.

2. What kind of music do you guys like to listen to?

I listen to a lot of Minus the Bear and Say Anything.

3. When y’all aren’t making music, what do you like to do for fun?

What is there to do besides make music?

4. What are Crash Coordinates’ plans for the future?

Platinum plaque on my wall.

5. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview.  Is there anything you would like to say your fans?

Stay hasty.

Artery Recordings

Posted on 16 December 2009 by Will

Official press release:

The Artery Foundation has announced the formation of their own label imprint with Razor & Tie for 2010. While many casual music listeners may not be entirely familiar with The Artery Foundation itself, there is no escaping the fruits of their labors, or their artists in the music scene. A management company based in Sacramento, CA they have a knack for finding diamonds in the rough and nurturing them into worldwide prominence. Some of their recent artists flooding the Billboard charts have included The Devil Wears Prada, Alesana, A Day To Remember, Dance Gavin Dance, Attack Attack!, Breathe Carolina and Whitechapel.

On the direction that Artery Recordings will take, Eric Rushing, founder of the company and the label says, “We believe in developing a band from the ground up, just like we have with all of the bands we manage. What more of a perfect situation if we can put out records as well and have a platform for the new bands that we discover. We will concentrate on a small amount of releases per year and keep one of our goals to be a very artist friendly label.” Label manager, Mike Milford, added “I think the great part of our partnership with Razor & Tie is that we have the full strength of a successful label, with a proven track history, and major distribution while retaining the close personal relationships with our artists. Unlike some labels where artists get lost in the shuffle, we will have the opportunity to take every creative idea and concern of our artist and address them with utmost attention and support.”

The Artery Foundation formed in 2004 at which point Rushing had been a successful concert promoter in Sacramento for over fifteen years. He also started a record label called 720 Records, which had helped to nurture the local music scene for over thirty releases before he stopped to focus on management full time. Rushing recalls, “From day one we started Artery it was a full-time operation. Our original roster was The Devil Wears Prada, Drop Dead Gorgeous, A Day To Remember and Alesana. On linking up with Razor & Tie Rushing said, “we initially linked up with them on a possible publishing deal for one of our artists. I then began to talk about other ventures with them and after talking with Cliff Chenfeld of the label several times he flew out to sign a deal with me and I can honestly say he sees my vision. The staff is amazing and eager to work (on) our releases.” Of Artery Recordings, Chenfeld said, “We are very excited to get into business with Eric and The Artery Foundation. Eric has an amazing track record of finding and developing quality artists and we expect to help him create additional exposure and opportunities for them.”

New York-based Razor & Tie is one of the fastest growing independent record labels in the United States. The label has enjoyed success in a variety of genres and garnered both Platinum sales and Grammy awards in the process. The rapidly expanding roster includes such artists as All That Remains, Angelique Kidjo, Dead Confederate, Dave Barnes and The Summer Set, as well as upcoming releases from Norma Jean and Just Surrender.

Artery’s initial two signings will have releases in store for the first quarter of 2010. Information and Artery’s take on each artist follows:

Bury Tomorrow:

Mike: I first heard them in Southampton UK at a club called Joiners. They opened the show for my band and I was blown away. I almost didn’t want to play after them because they owned the show. The band recently released their album, Portraits in the UK and for the U.S. release we went in and recorded some additional songs and packed the album with some of the best songs I have heard in their genre in a while. They are currently on tour with Bless The Fall in the UK and will have a big time U.S. tour to announce for spring 2010.

Eric: This record was an office favorite of ours, getting passed around and played in every part of our office. Their songs are so catchy and melodic at times but then just as brutal and hard at others. We are very excited to introduce such a great band to the U.S. The album is to be released on March 16, 2010.

Chelsea Grin:

Eric: The first time I saw this band I was completely blown away and the crowd interaction was just as intense, it reminded me of the first time I saw Whitechapel. This band is very young and the kids are already loving them coast to coast. Very excited about their debut!

Mike: The instant I heard them I was hooked. They are very new to the touring circuit, but have already built a strong draw across the states in their short career. They have shared the stage with such acts as Suicide Silence, Parkway Drive and My Children My Bride. In August of 2009 the band recorded at Lambesis Studio. The result is their upcoming record Desolation Of Eden out on February 16, 2010.
